Gilbert Simondon: translations [re-updated]

As far as I know there are still no ‘offical’ English translations available of the – highly interesting work of Gilbert Simondon.
However, there do circulate some translations on the internet – most notably his book On the Modes of Existence of Technical Objects. Others include ‘The Position of the Problem of Ontogenesis, ‘Technical Mentality’ and a 1966 , review by Gilles Deleuze – for whom Simondon was a great inspiration (think of his distinction between singularities and individuals and the notion of individuation) – of ‘L’Individu et sa genese physico-biologique’. All of these are truly worthwile.

桑山忠明の作品はあきらかにアメリカ型のフォーマリズムの問題を継承している。例えばその特徴の一つに非造形性というのがあると思う。造形とはつまり、特定のフレームがあってそのフレームのなかに「よい形」が配置されることだ。あるいは、形が形として見えるためにはフレーム（地）が成立していなければならない、というようなこと。例えばインスタレーションのように空間全体がフレームとなったとしても、フレーム内の形が問題であれば造形的なものだということになる。対して、例えばジャッドの規則的に並んだ直方体（というか箱）の作品などでは、置かれたモノ（直方体）が作品なのではなく、そのモノが置かれることでその場所が作品となる。そこには図と地の区別がなく、人はモノ（実の形）を観ているのでもモノとモノの隙間（虚の形）を観ているのでもなく、空間を分節する仕草のようなものだけを観ることになる。つまり「形」がなくて、いわば空間＝リズムだけがある、ということになっている（空間がリズムによって満たされている、というのか）。つまり、そう見えるように絶妙に直方体を配置するわけだけど。いやそれでも、でもここに直方体があるじゃん、と言って指さして、直方体の方に注目してしまうと、それはすぐにモノ（図、造形）になってしまうのだけど。
